This summer, archaeological training will be held in Anyang, China, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the last capital of Shang civilization was located. Since initial discovery of oracle bone inscriptions (the earliest writing in East Asia) at the end of the 19th century, the ruins of Shang capital in Anyang have been the setting for numerous discoveries and breakthroughs in the investigation of Bronze Age civilizations in China, as well as for training generations of archaeologists since the introduction of modern archaeology in the early 20th century. This six-week field program offers archaeological training for students interested in archaeology and early China. In addition to active participation and involvement in on-going archaeological excavation, this program will focus on learning ancient technologies and material culture through actual manufacture and examination of a range of artifacts, particularly ceramics, bronzes, jades, and stones. Lectures will introduce you to Shang archaeology and provide you with a good understanding of archaeological research in Anyang, and its comparative value and significance in the investigation of early cities and civilizations across the world.
