2016 Cultures and Communitites: Tanzania

Join us as we travel to Nguruma Village, Tanzania where we'll partner The Vijiji Foundation, a local non-profit organization, to learn the principles and practices of Community-Based Research and to work alongside community members to develop and implement a variety of VolunTourism programs in bio-intensive agriculture and the environment, education and English-language literacy, and sustainable community development. We will live and work in Nguruma Village, an agricultural community of about 4,000 people situated on the lush, lower slopes of Mount Meru, just 10 km east Arusha, the largest city in the area. Our days will be a mixture of classroom and "hands-on" experience, with the majority of the time spent working directly with the local Meru people. Weekends are free to explore the many nearby attractions and will include a number of day trips to places such as Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, Crater Lake Challa, and Maasai territory. When the course is over, you have the option to stay another week for a wildlife and culture safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, and the villages of the Datoga, Iraqw and Hadza of the Lake Eyasi region (if you choose this option, there is an additional cost).
